Overview

Prepare for an awe-inspiring adventure with the Darjeeling Himalayan Trek, traversing the legendary Sandakphu-Phalut route. Standing proudly at an elevation of 11,930 feet, Sandakphu is the highest peak in West Bengal and offers a spectacle found almost nowhere else on earth: an uninterrupted, panoramic view of four of the world's five highest peaks—Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu.

This 6-day trek takes you through the heart of the Singalila National Park. As you ascend, the landscape transforms from dense bamboo glades and silver fir forests to sprawling meadows bursting with rhododendrons and magnolias. You will spend your nights in charming, rustic teahouses along the Indo-Nepal border, experiencing the warm hospitality of the mountain communities. This trek is perfectly balanced for both seasoned trekkers and enthusiastic beginners looking for maximum visual reward.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Manebhanjan & Trek Preparation

  • Morning: Arrive at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station and drive to Manebhanjan (approx. 4 hours), the base camp for the Sandakphu trek.
  • Afternoon: Check into a guesthouse. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing, securing your trek permits, and receiving a comprehensive briefing from your guide.
  • Evening: Enjoy a hearty dinner and rest up for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Manebhanjan to Tumling (Trek: 11 km)

  • Morning: After an early breakfast, begin your ascent. The trail climbs steeply through pine forests to Chitrey, offering gorgeous views of the valley.
  • Afternoon: Stop for lunch at Meghma. Continue the trek along the Indo-Nepal border to reach Tumling (9,600 ft).
  • Evening: Check into a cozy Nepalese teahouse in Tumling. Witness a glorious sunset over the Sleeping Buddha (Kangchenjunga massif) if the skies are clear.

Day 3: Tumling to Kalipokhri (Trek: 13 km)

  • Morning: Wake up early to catch the sunrise. After breakfast, enter the Singalila National Park. The trail winds through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests.
  • Afternoon: Pass through Gairibas and tackle a steep climb to Kaiyakatta for a hot lunch. Continue walking to reach the black waters of the sacred Kalipokhri lake (10,400 ft).
  • Evening: Check into a local lodge. The temperatures drop significantly here, so bundle up around the dining room stove and share stories with fellow trekkers.

Day 4: Kalipokhri to Sandakphu (Trek: 6 km)

  • Morning: Today's trek is relatively short but steep. Begin the ascent from Kalipokhri through Bhikhaybhanjyang, famously known as the "Valley of Poison" due to its aconite plants.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at Sandakphu (11,930 ft) by lunchtime. Celebrate reaching the summit! Spend the afternoon marveling at the 180-degree panoramic view of the Everest and Kangchenjunga clusters.
  • Evening: Enjoy a celebratory dinner. The wind at Sandakphu is notoriously fierce, so stay warm inside your teahouse.

Day 5: Sandakphu to Srikhola via Gurdum (Trek: 16 km, descent)

  • Morning: Wake up for the ultimate sunrise over the Himalayas—a truly spiritual experience. After breakfast, begin the long descent towards Srikhola.
  • Afternoon: The trail descends steeply through dense forests of oak and chestnut, passing through the beautiful village of Gurdum. Enjoy lunch here before continuing down to Srikhola, a picturesque village by a river.
  • Evening: Check into a riverside lodge. Enjoy a well-deserved, relaxing evening by the flowing waters of the Srikhola river.

Day 6: Srikhola to Darjeeling/NJP and Departure

  • Morning: Enjoy a relaxed morning by the river. After breakfast, our vehicle will pick you up for the drive to Darjeeling or directly down to NJP/Bagdogra.
  • Afternoon: Conclude your trekking expedition as you are dropped off for your onward journey, taking the majestic mountains with you in your memories.

Packing List

  • High-quality, broken-in trekking boots with good ankle support.
  • Layered clothing: thermal base layers, fleece jacket, and a wind/waterproof outer shell.
  • Warm accessories: gloves, woolen cap, and woolen socks.
  • A comfortable backpack (30-40L) with a rain cover.
  • Trekking pole(s) to assist with steep ascents and descents.
  • Headlamp, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm.
  • Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets.

Local Tips

  • Pacing is Key: Walk at a steady, comfortable rhythm. Don't rush the ascents to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the trek, even if you don't feel thirsty in the cold.
  • Teahouse Charm: Teahouse amenities are basic but incredibly charming. Embrace the simplicity, enjoy the hot soupy noodles (Wai-Wai), and engage with the friendly locals.

Best Time to Visit

The trek is best undertaken in two distinct windows:

  • March to May: For vibrant, blooming rhododendrons and magnolias covering the hillsides.
  • October to early December: For the crispest, clearest air and the most spectacular, uninterrupted views of the Himalayan peaks.
